Press Releases Hokitika water supply upgrade proposal open for public consultation

A proposal for a Westland District Council / Westland Milk Products partnership to upgrade the Hokitika water supply opens for public submissions today (31 October, 2014).

The $5.1 million upgrade to the water supply will meet Westland Milk Products’ growing demand for high quality water and give Hokitika an alternative intake in the event of an emergency.

The proposal is that Westland District Council brings forward the already planned upgrades in the current Ten Year Plan and raise a $5.1 million loan to fund these works. The costs will be recovered via Westland Milk Products’ targeted water rates over a period of 5 years.

Westland Deputy Mayor Pauline Cox says, “Council has considered this proposal with great interest. Our view is that it will benefit Westland ratepayers and Westland District. There will be no cost to the ratepayers for this upgrade”.

The proposal is open for submissions from 31 October 2014, which close at 4pm on 18 November 2014. Copies of the submissions form can be obtained from Westland District Council website ( or a hard copy can be picked up from Council offices. Submissions can be made either online, or by using the printed submission form, which can be posted or delivered to Westland District Council offices at 36 Weld Street, Hokitika.

Westland CEO Rod Quin says it is good news that the consultation and decision can happen this year. “This will save costs for both Westland and the Council and, if the proposal is approved, allow work on this important project to start sooner”
