Corporate Social Responsibility strategy making an impact.
Westland is proud to announce the publication of its 2023 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) progress report, providing a scorecard on our progress towards our CSR strategy targets. This report reflects our commitment to sustainability and social responsibility and provides us with a view on where things are on track and where we need to put more focus.
Some of the key highlights include:
- Emissions Reduction Target: Due to our successful achievement of the interim emissions target in Year One, we have upgraded our goals to a 25% reduction by 2025 and a 50% reduction by 2035 (scope 1 and 2, from 2018 base year).
- Waste Reduction: Compared to our 2020 base year, we have reduced waste to landfill by 146 metric tonnes.
- Leadership Development: Celebrated two years of our internal "Grow Our Own" leadership programme, along with the recognition of 18 staff members for their long service and contributions to Westland.
- Safety Improvements: A 7% increase in safety reporting in 2023 compared to 2022, demonstrating our ongoing commitment to a safe working environment.
Alongside our CSR progress report, we have also published the 2023 Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventory Report, which provides an overview of emissions associated with Westland. The report reflects the impact of higher volumes of milk processed on site and increased production in 2023. Despite this increased activity we remain on track to deliver our upgraded targets within the established timeline.
Starting January 1, 2024, Westland Milk Products and its related companies in New Zealand − Canary Foods, Easiyo, Pure Nutrition, and Oceania Dairy − have been collaborating under one strategic plan. Throughout 2024, we will undertake a comprehensive refresh of our CSR strategy to ensure our targets and initiatives are focused and aligned across the group. Reporting based on this new strategy and updated targets will start from 2025/26, incorporating the GRI standards (GRI 1: Foundation 2021).
We are excited about these developments and remain committed to driving positive environmental and social impact through our robust CSR framework.
